Bill and Linda Smittcamp and the Children's Hospital Central California Foundation Board of Directors hosted 650 guests at the 17th annual Harvest Ball on Sept. 27 at Wawona Ranch. The event raised over $500,000 in support of the Valley’s only dedicated pediatric hospital to help fund high-quality, comprehensive healthcare services in more than 40 pediatric specialties.
“The chandeliers used in the decor transformed the packing shed into a glamorous gala,” said Molly Eide, signature events manager, Children’s Hospital Foundation. “Bill Smittcamp commented from the stage that it resembled the Ritz!”
Gala attendees were welcomed with music and wine tasting. “Donna Parnagian and the Fowler Packing sponsorship of the hors d'oeuvres was a huge hit once again, as guests enjoyed the food throughout the silent auction,” said Eide. “Pardini's delicious dinner was lovely. They creatively incorporated peach flavors into the meal to represent the harvest theme.” A live auction took place during dinner.
Harvest Ball guests also heard stories about everyday miracles that happen at Children’s and learned why the Hospital consistently ranks at the top of national benchmarks for outcomes, nursing excellence and patient satisfaction.
Melinda Cavalletto travelled from Denver with her husband, Bob Yow, to share her personal story and appreciation for Children’s. Born 45 years ago with a rare congenital heart condition, Cavalletto benefitted from a ground-breaking procedure. Just 5 months old at the time of her surgery, she was known to be the youngest person in the world to undergo open-heart surgery with an artificial valve. She continued her care at Children’s until she was 18.
“The guests were moved by Melinda's story, and were especially touched by the stories shared by her father in the introductory video,” said Eide. Melinda’s father, Nick Cavalletto, is a rancher from Chowchilla. He shared poignant memories of his daughter’s experiences at Children’s as a tiny cardiac patient and what it was like as a parent to face this challenge.
Big dreams and a strong commitment were the bedrock that helped build Children’s Hospital more than 60 years ago. Today, these same qualities lay a solid foundation for future growth. Children’s opened its doors with the help of a supportive community and will continue providing essential pediatric medical services as long as that partnership remains.
