Medical Director of the Pediatric Hospitalist Program and board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, Dr. Mark Barrett has been a hospitalist at Children’s for over 5 years and leads the team in continuing to improve access to care for patients and families. An active member of Children’s medical staff, Dr. Barrett is the Co-Chair of the Emergency Medical Response Committee (Code Blue) and a member of the Antimicrobial Utilization Team. He was awarded Children’s Hospital’s Board of Trustees Meritorious Service Award for Education in 2006 for giving semi-annual nursing lectures on general pediatric topics and updating resident education.
Dr. Barrett also served in the U.S. Peace Corps as a Peace Corps Volunteer, where he was a Mathematics Teacher and Department Head of Luzdi Secondary School and a Technical and Logistics Coordinator providing teacher training in Malawi, Africa. Dr. Barrett still maintains strong ties with Malawi and the village of Ludzi, visiting regularly and is currently raising money to build an Orphanage/Nursery School at Ludzi.
A graduate of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine, Dr. Barrett completed his pediatric residency at UCSF-Fresno. He also earned a master’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley; his thesis reported on Epidemiology of AIDS-related Coccidioidomycosis in California. Following his pediatric medical training, Dr. Barrett joined Children’s Hospital Central California as a pediatric hospitalist. He also serves in the Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Emergency Department.
