Dr. Irene McAleer is board certified in urological surgery by the American Board of Urology and has practiced as a pediatric urologist since 1990. She has worked at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, National Naval Medical Center, Water Reed Army Medical Center and Children’s National Hospital and Health Center. Previous academic appointments include assistant professor of the Departments of Pediatrics and Surgery (Urology) at the University of Connecticut, assistant professor of Surgery (Urology) and Pediatrics at University of California, San Diego and assistant professor of Surgery at Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. Currently, she is an assistant professor of Pediatrics at University of California, San Francisco – Fresno.
Her special interests include the prenatal management of urological problems and conditions. She has worked with neonatologists, perinatologists and geneticists to assuage the fears and concerns of parents who have received news of a prenatally diagnosed urologic condition.
Active in the medical community, Dr. McAleer has served as president of the American Association of Pediatric Urology and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Surgeons, European Society of Pediatric Urology, American Urological Association and the Society of Pediatric Urology.
Dr. McAleer speaks at medical conferences and meetings and her work has been published in numerous medical texts and journals including the Journal of Urology and Urology.
Dr. McAleer honorably retired from the United States Navy – Reserves in 2003. During her years of service, she earned numerous awards including the Army Commendation Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal and the Navy Meritorious Service Ribbon.
Dr. McAleer received her medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus. She completed an internship in surgery at the Naval Hospital in Oakland, a residency in urology at the National Naval Medical Center in Maryland and a fellowship in pediatric urology with the University of California, San Diego Medical Center at the Children’s Hospital and Health Center, San Diego. Dr. McAleer has a Master of Business Administration degree from Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh Business School in Scotland.
