Dr. Gary Arends joined Children’s Hospital’s orthopaedic surgery department as a non-operative orthopaedist in May 2011.
In his role, Dr. Arends works closely with the department’s pediatric orthopaedic surgeons in treating congenital deformities of the upper and lower extremities, spinal disorders, sports-related injuries, neuromuscular diseases and other conditions.
Dr. Arends is board certified in primary care sports medicine. Prior to coming to Children’s, he was in private practice for eight years in primary care sports medicine and non-operative orthopaedics in the greater Los Angeles area.
An Ironman triathlete and a former All-American in track and field, Dr. Arends has worked with numerous colleges, universities, high schools and semi-professional teams around the country as a team physician or consultant.
He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American College of Sports Medicine, American Institute of Ultrasound Medicine, Osteopathic Physician and Surgeons of California, American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, American Osteopathic Association, and American Academy of Family Physicians.
Dr. Arends received his medical degree from Des Moines University – College of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines, Iowa. He did his medical internship at Genesys Regional Medical Center in Grand Blanc, Mich. He completed a family practice residency with an emphasis in sports medicine at Metropolitan Hospital in Grand Rapids, Mich. He completed a fellowship in primary care sports medicine at Michigan State University, Sparrow Health System.
